Travel tip #9: Check your water bottle before buying in India

Living in Europe, accessing fresh water is so easy. Just open the tap water and drink it. While traveling only buying water bottles is obvious or get a filter bottle for your trip (Read more here about water filter bottles).

Let me tell you, in India it is not that easy. It is my first country after 33 countries, where buying sealed water bottles can be considered not safe! I was shocked hearing about that fact. But if you take a little care what brands and where to buy it, it will be ok and you can have fun on your trip.

Original Water Bottle

Can you spot the differences? It should be the same brand, but spelled differently every time.

Fake Water Bottles

Check the original spelling and logo before buying. Let them show you the water bottle before giving them the money. Popular brands are e.g. Bisleri, Aquafina, Kinley.

Buy in decent places, supermarkets or restaurants. When you order water in restaurants, you get usually a big water bottle and can take it home. Sometimes I just ordered extra water only to take it home, so no hassle to buy it on the way. Take extra care at street stalls like these:

The water in the fake bottles is refilled with filtered or not filtered water to save money, sealed up and sold at normal price. Be careful and in doubt don’t drink it. Have a safe trip!
