Volunteering is an amazing experience to immerse in the local culture and stay longer in one country. I did two volunteerings during my stay on Hawai’i. On Ohau and Big Island. On Big Island I went to an aquaculture farm working and living there.

A usual day starts with breakfast around 8. After breakfast, the work starts depending on the weather. Changing weather from warm sunshine to rain the whole day is completely normal. So pack your rain poncho. The work ranges from helping cooking to digging a pond in the garden to saw wood. It is usually physical and quite easy work. After preparing lunch, another 1-2 hours work, it’s time for some free time.

Exploring the city and area, chill in the garden, reading a book, buying groceries. It’s up to yourself. It’s a good time to also plan your further travels and relax from sightseeing. It’s like a small holiday from traveling.

On the weekends it’s a good opportunity for some road trips in the area, visit some volcanos or waterfalls, snorkeling and eat poke bowls. Hawai’i is really beautiful and has diverse nature.

To find free volunteer spots, I use Worldpackers. It’s quite easy to create a profile and search for available spots in the city you want to go. It’s also transparent through the reviews of other people. You can also contact them and ask specific questions.
