Travel Inspo #2: Paella Cooking Class in Barcelona

Immersing in a new culture means also often times immersing in the food culture. Taking cooking classes while traveling is a good opportunity to exchange with locals and meet fellow travelers.

In Barcelona, I took a cooking class at Gastronomic Arts Barcelona. Overall the class was 3 to 3.5 hours. This included shopping, preparing and cooking from scratch.

First we went to the Mercat de la Boqueria. This is a popular spot for buying meat, fish, veggies and fruits. Grab some fresh juice and stroll around the market. Our Chef Natalia showed us where to buy good seafood, prawns, mussels and squid.

After getting back, it was time to prepare a whole squid. Never did that before and it was really interesting to know how.

The time went by really fast and with 10 people all the seafood and veggies were prepared quickly.

One of the most important thing Natalia told us is that onions don’t belong in a Paella! I really didn’t know that. After putting all the ingredients together and putting the seafood in the Paella, 25 min went by fast and it was finally time to eat and drink sangria.

It was such an awesome experience and delicious food. Interestingly most of the travelers were from the US that I met during my trip, who were in Spain for a short holiday.
